Important Notice: Beware of Impersonation Scams

Dear Valued Bank of Estes Park Customers,

We want to alert you to a growing number of scams where criminals impersonate law enforcement, tech support, and financial institution fraud departments. These scams are designed to deceive and defraud individuals by creating a sense of urgency and fear. Here are some key points to help you recognize and avoid these scams:

Types of Impersonation Scams:

  1. Law Enforcement Impersonation:
    • Scammers may call or email, pretending to be law enforcement officials, threatening arrest or demanding money.
    • They often spoof caller ID information* to make it appear as if the call is from a legitimate agency.

*Spoofing caller ID information means changing the caller ID to make it look like the call is coming from someone else, like a trusted company or government agency. Scammers do this to trick people into answering the call and  believing it’s legitimate.

       2. Tech Support Impersonation:

    • Criminals pose as tech support representatives, claiming there is an issue with your computer or device.
    • They may ask you to download software or provide remote access to your device.

       3. Financial Institution Fraud Department Impersonation:

    • Scammers pretend to be from your bank’s fraud department, claiming there is suspicious activity on your account.
    • They may request personal information or ask you to transfer funds to a “secure” account.

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Do not respond to unsolicited calls or emails from unknown individuals or numbers.
  • Never provide personal information such as Social Security numbers, bank account details, or passwords over the phone or email.
  • Do not click on links or download attachments from unknown sources.
  • Verify the identity of the caller by contacting the organization directly using a known and trusted phone number.
  • Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement and your financial institution immediately.

What to Do If You Are Targeted:

  • Cease all contact with the scammers immediately.
  • Safeguard your financial accounts by notifying your bank and monitoring for any unusual activity.
Your safety and security are our top priority. Please stay vigilant and protect yourself from these fraudulent schemes.
Sincerely,
Bank of Estes Park

  • Change your passwords on a regular basis, as a good practice to help prevent unauthorized access.
  • Download free software only from websites you know and trust.
  • Do not install software without knowing exactly what it is or what it will do (read the end-user license agreement).
  • Close pop-up ads by clicking on the “X” instead of clicking within the advertisement itself.
  • Do not click link inside of spam email. Especially emails claiming to offer anti-spyware software.
  • Don’t give any of your personal information to any web sites that do not use encryption or other secure methods to protect it.
Phishing & Spoofing

Phishing scams target consumers by “spoofing” emails and websites. Here’s how it works:

  • You receive an email message, asking you to click on a link in order to update some sensitive personal information.
  • The link will redirect you to a “spoofed” website, which is designed to look like a legitimate website.
  • The website will ask you to input personal information such as your account numbers, PINs , or a social security number.
  • Poor grammar and misspelled words from unknown sources asking you for personal information are clear warning signs of a phishing scam being operated outside of the United States.
  • Phishing emails may also be fake contests or offerings, asking you to input personal information.
  • If an offer or email you receive is too good to be true, it most likely is.
